Filmphonics: Un Chien Andalou and La Jetée + Electronic Live Score

Description: Filmphonics; a series of live score screenings that bridge the gap between sound and moving image, curating diverse nights that include silent films brought to life by live scores, special screenings of films about music, experimental collaborations and edgy live performances. This month experimental electronic composer and multi-instrumentalist Antwerp will be creating totally unique new scores to Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dali’s surreal Un Chien Andalou, and science fiction featurette La Jetée by Chris Marker.

The Films...
Fledging director Luis Buñuel and painter Salvador Dali create the ultimate surrealist film, Un Chien Andalou, using a barrage of striking and irrational images designed to shock and provoke. During the course of the film, you witness a close-up of a woman's eye being slashed open with a razor; a man dragging a piano, two bishops, and a pair of rotting asses across a room; ants swarming around a hole in a man's palm; and sundry severed limbs and gratuitous slayings. Though this was originally a silent film, Buñuel later added a recorded score consisting of Liebestod from Wagner's opera Tristan und Isolde and a number of popular tangos of the time.

La Jetée is a 1962 French science fiction featurette by Chris Marker. Constructed almost entirely from still black and white photos, and won the Prix Jean Vigo award for short film. Time travel, still images, a past, present and future and the aftermath of World War III. The tale of a man, a slave, sent back and forth, in and out of time, to find a solution to the world's fate. To replenish its decreasing stocks of food, medicine and energies, and in doing so, resulting in a perpetual memory of a lone female, life, death and past events that are recreated on an airports jetée.

The Music…
Antwerp is a Hackney based composer, multi-instrumentalist and sound artist working across a range of styles including electronic, classical and avant-garde music.
