The Curzon Gallery are pleased to present three impasto oil paintings by Allan Storer, painted with palette knife and lashings of oil paint on one of St. Ives most renowned beaches. Porthmeor.

Inspired by a spectacular, coastline and the unique translucent quality of its reflective light and its unique climate warmed by the gulf stream; artists have settled in the old harbour and fishing village of St. Ives, Cornwall for over a century.

Setting up studios in the old sail lofts overlooking Porthmeor sands, artists worked alongside local residents on what was a communal working beach facilitating long rows of washing lines in juxtaposition with a variety of domestic chores including boat and sail repair.

Now Porthmeor still overlooked by several artists’ studios and the Tate gallery is frequented by surfers and holiday makers. A long yellow sandy beach, close to the former homes of local artist Alfred Wallis (1855-1942) and Dame Barbara Hepworth’s (1903-1975) Sculpture Garden.

Following the tradition of the Cornish ein plein air artists, in all weathers, surrounded by palette knives and oils, here too Allan Storer sets up canvas and easel to create his own heavy impasto works.
