(detail) Exhibition

An eclectic exhibition which invites audiences to scrutinise the finer details in the work of more than 100 international artists will travel from Bangkok to open in London this September, before showing in Lincoln later in the year.

(detail) is an exhibition showcasing small segments of work created by 118 different painters from around the world. Curator Andrew Bracey invited each of the contributors to select and submit one close-up image of a small section of their own work, before printing and displaying them together to create an enormous and unique collage.

Andrew, himself a practising artist and a Senior Lecturer in the School of Fine & Performing Arts at the University of Lincoln, UK, created the show to offer a glimpse into the intricacies of many different paintings.

Andrew said: “The reproduced close-up allows us to focus on the brush strokes, surface and minutiae of the painting. In the art world, the close-up is most commonly used in the pages of the exhibition catalogues or in monographs, but with (detail) it is central to the exhibition.

“In the studio I have found my own relationship to working on a painting is up close to it, with only occasional glimpses of the whole as I step back. This focus on the artist’s viewpoint of the painting was my inspiration behind this exhibition - it is an attempt to bring the studio mentality to the gallery. There really is a power in the detail, and it offers up fresh possibilities for viewing painting.”

(detail) includes work from acclaimed artists such as Turner Prize nominee Fiona Rae, one of the Young British Artists (YBAs) who rose to prominence in the 1990s, and Guggenheim Fellow, Shirley Kaneda. Work by artists Professor Steve Sutton and Dr Alec Shepley, both from the University of Lincoln, will also be on show.

The exhibition began its tour in Bangkok’s H-Project Space earlier this year, where it responded to the unusual setting of the gallery – a traditionally constructed Thai house – with the 118 artworks each fitting into the wooden framework of the walls.

It will now be recreated at the Transition Gallery in London, where the exhibition will be open to the public from Saturday 20th September – Sunday 12th October 2014, and The Usher Gallery in Lincoln, where it runs from Friday 19th December 2014 – Sunday 19th April 2015.

(detail) creates a show that is responsive to each venue and features the work of a wide range of painters, from the well-established to recent graduates. Their art features a number of different mediums and encompasses abstraction, landscape, figuration and conceptually driven practices.
