College of Optometrists to remember the First World War at Open House 2014

The College of Optometrists will mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War when it opens its doors to the public during Open House 2014 on Sunday 21 September.

Visitors will be transported back to 1914 for the launch of the British Optical Association museum’s First World War trail, housed at the College’s headquarters. During the event, a costumed character will provide insight and anecdotes on the health and vision of the war’s volunteer recruits.

The College will be open to the public between 1pm and 5pm, and there is no need to book in advance.

Neil Handley, Museum Curator, said: “This is the eleventh year the College has taken part in Open House, and it seemed fitting that we acknowledge the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War this time.”

The College welcomed nearly 600 visitors during the Open House London event last year. Open House is held every year for one weekend in September, during which a wide range of buildings usually closed to the public can be visited completely free of charge.

The College of Optometrists is based at 42 Craven St, London WC2N 5NG, between Charing Cross and Embankment stations.
