Reification by Eugene Macki. Art Exhibition: End-of-residency solo show

The Muse Gallery at 269 Portobello Road comes alive with an exhibition of new works created by artist Eugene Macki. After spending eight months as an artist in residence, ‘Reification’ is a response to particular ideas as well as the architecture of the gallery.

Macki explores themes concerned with memory, play, repetition, desire, contradiction, aesthetics and value. Using materials such as marble, plaster, cement, fabric, wood, removal blanket, stretch-film, paint, video monitors, solar panel and Perspex among others. The relationship between materials, image and text creates an inverse conversation. For Macki, the process of making art is a means of searching. There is a degree of sacrifice and struggle involved - the arduous search to discover something new.

‘The range of things that interest me has expanded relatively broad in subject, shape and form. It is with a strong desire to bring forward all the ideas and imagery that have continuously changed my state of being within the last twelve months. Currently, I want to examine and foster greater dialogue across different mediums.’ Eugene Macki in conversation with friends. [1]

About Eugene Macki
Macki's work varies from sculpture, painting, monumental installations and video to text. Graduated with a MA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art and a BA in Contemporary Fine Art and Philosophy from Sheffield Hallam University. Participated in solo and group exhibitions across the United Kingdom. The Royal Academy Summer Show, Soho Sculpture Prize: Morgan Lovell, The Cello Factory with the London Group, Barbican Arts Group Trust, The Crypt Gallery in King Cross among others.
