In this time of conservatism and austerity, as ‘normcore’ takes over the catwalks and homos turn hetero, three of the UK’s most provocative and irreverent performers ask ‘what is the new normal?’ and ‘should we even care?’

‘There is nothing quite like him: bold and unique, electrifying and disarmingly humane’

TIME OUT on David Hoyle

Grand Dame of political drag David Hoyle joins forces with award winning cabaret duo Bourgeois & Maurice for a musical journey through some of the most offensively ‘middle of the road’ music around. Alongside their covers of Dad-Rock this brand new show will feature Hoyle’s unique brand of monologue and political rallying, as well as original satire-sodden songs from Bourgeois & Maurice. Through the universal medium of bland music this unconventional trio will attempt to dissect, understand and possibly even become part of the system they’ve spent so long moaning about. They’re hoping it might lead to an MBE.

‘Musical comedy’s answer to the Manson family’ EVENING STANDARD on Bourgeois &Maurice

Following previous one-off collaborations Middle of the Road sees the threesome unite for a whole new, full performance event, taking place at East London’s experimental cultural hub LimeWharf.

This is everything you ever wanted to happen to a James Blunt song. And more.

DAVID HOYLE

The sensational anti-drag queen David Hoyle came to prominence in the 1990s as the Divine David, his lacerating social commentary – targeting both bourgeois Britain and the materialistic-hedonistic gay scene, which he called ‘the biggest suicide cult in history’, was offset by breathtaking instances of self-recrimination and even self-harm.

Following a couple of outré late-night Channel 4 shows and a cameo in Velvet Goldmine, Hoyle killed the Divine David off during a spectacular show at the Streatham Ice.

He returned to TV screens in 2005 in Chris Morris’s Nathan Barley and began performing live again, under his own name. This time round, the chances of serious injury in any given show seemed greatly reduced, but Hoyle’s biting satire, bravura costumes, wicked comic timing and com- pelling charisma remain intact. As well as the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, with which he is most closely associated, he’s performed at the Soho Theatre, Chelsea Theatre, Battersea Arts Centre, National Portrait Gallery, Tate Britain and Victoria & Albert Museum. Expect polemic, pathos, provocative politicking and high comedy.

‘So risky is his act, so fully live in every respect, that it makes everyone watching feel more alive, too’ GUARDIAN

BOURGEOIS & MAURICE

Part-cabaret, part-theatre, part-catwalk freak-show, Bourgeois & Maurice are a musical cabaret duo with style as sharp as their wit.

Their original songs blend unashamedly catchy pop hooks with bitingly satirical lyrics, taking on a vast range of important human issues, from reptilian conspiracy theories to the eroticization of the finance sector.

As one of the UK’s leading cabaret acts they have performed in some of the country’s most prestigious venues including the Royal Opera House, Southbank Centre, Wales Millennium Centre and the Royal Academy of Arts. They have enjoyed sell-out shows at Edinburgh Fringe Festival and also toured the music festival circuit with appearances at Glastonbury, Latitude, Bestival, Electric Picnic and Lovebox, among others.

They have written and produced five full-length theatre shows, their most recent production Sugartits was produced at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2012 by Soho Theatre and Underbelly Productions. It toured to Soho Theatre, 17 UK venues and Adelaide Cabaret Festival. They won the London Cabaret Award for Best Music Act in 2012 and have been nominated in both years since. They have released 3 albums.
