Australian First Nations Double Bill ~ The Secret Country: The First Australians Fight Back (1985) & Utopia (2013)

Thurs 25th Sep – Doors open 7pm - £5 Entry

The secret history of Australia is a historical conspiracy of silence. Written history has long applied selectivity to what it records, largely ignoring the shameful way that the First Nations (aka Aborigines), were and continue to be, treated.

~In The Secret Country: The First Australians Fight Back (1985, 55mins), John Pilger returns home to Australia to explore the rich diversity and ingenuity of the Australian culture. However he discovers the shameful history of persecution of the first Australians (aka Aborigines). The Secret Country tells of their struggles as they were driven from their lands, following events throughout the 20th century as they relate to Indigenous rights.

~In Utopia (2013, 110mins) John Pilger returns to the communities he visited 28 years ago. The documentary takes its title from Utopia, an Aboriginal homeland in the Northern Territory of Australia and explores the experiences of indigenous Australians and what he terms "the denigrating of their humanity". Utopia is both an epic portrayal of the oldest continuous human culture, and an investigation into a suppressed colonial past and rapacious present.

Ken Fero’s Po Po (2013) and Burn (2014) plus Q&A with Carole Duggan, Myrna Simpson and Ken Fero

Fri 26th Sep – Doors open 7pm - £5 Entry

~Po Po (2013, 25mins) is a short documentary into the death of Jason McPherson who lost his life in shocking circumstances after being taken to Notting Hill Police Station. The film traces his families struggle for truth and justice and the subsequent 'investigation' by the Independent Police Complaints Commission. Using exclusive CCTV footage and rare access to an IPCC Commissioner the film lays bare the impact of a death in police custody.

~Burn (2014, 30mins) In August 2011 Britain was on fire - what was the spark that led to the crisis? When Mark Duggan was shot by the police the scene was set for a confrontation, but it was not the first time. In this grass-roots documentary we hear why Tottenham burned, show how the flames spread and look at the deep-rooted reasons that have set fires blazing in the last three decades. Four people in this small community, all black and working class, have died at the hands of the police and this film retraces their story. Powerful witness testimonies are balanced against police reaction to the violence that exploded and the film offers a fresh political analysis of the cause of the uprising. Exploring ideas of collective memory ‘Burn’ is poetry for the people. This radical film bears witness that only justice for those that have died at the hands of the police can put out the fires.
