Elefest is Elephant and Castle’s Festival. It is a celebration of the best known but misunderstood parts of London. Elefest is now in its 12th year, and the area is once again on the verge of massive change. Elefest programme celebrates the past, present and future of the Elephant and Castle. It mixes home grown with national and international talent and some that are in between.

Open studios of all kinds, from a local radio station, a pop up gallery and an endangered display of public art warm you up for the big Opening Night gig at the Coronet with performances from critically acclaimed bands Escapists, Movie and Lois and the Love and a DJ set from The Maccabees whose forthcoming rockumentary celebrates the Elephant and Castle.

Friday heralds more art, music and live theatre with WARA and Movimientos DJs at Hotel Elephant warehouse, Jolie Ladie at the hotel’s gallery, and theatre group Blue Elephant perform a scratch night at Southwark Playhouse. Local gastro institution Brasserie Toulouse Lautrec contribute evenings of great music and great food throughout the festival with the Italian Stefania Arcieri Quartet on Friday, young talent from Italia Conti Academy on Saturday and Emrys Baird & Soul Immigrants on Sunday. The Cinema Museum plays a big part in the festival with Attack The Block (which was filmed locally) featuring on Friday night.

The weekend includes guided walks by local experts or a relaxed alternative imbibing at REFUEL in the new pop-up Plant Station where once petrol was pumped DJs will pump soulful tunes. The Cinema Museum goes sci-fi for children in the morning and sci-fi for adults in the afternoon, a Jules Verne re-score in the evening before a sci-fi allnighter with Film70. Feasting on Saturday is with London’s roving StockMKT at Hotel Elephant while on Sunday share local grub with Incredible Edible Southwark, music from John Pandit of Asian Dub Foundation and a screening of Mass E Bhat. Find time for the treasure hunt, the pub quiz, two films with live re-scores at the Cinema Museum and get your hands dirty on another guerrilla gardening mission making the Elephant even more colourful.
