The figurative artist Romanos Moukarzel will be holding an Open Studio from the 17th to the 19th of October, called “The Chelsea Paintings”. He will be exhibiting a new body of recent works inspired by Chelsea. A collection of intimate scenes portraying hidden corners, the river Thames and Chelsea streets.

Romanos has lived in Chelsea for most of his life. For the last fifteen years he has lived and worked in an artist studio in Tite Street, following in the footsteps of artists such as Whistler and Sargent.
Following his show last December (Gallery 27, Cork Street) of studio based paintings, he decided to pursue a new challenge of solely plein air painting. His subject was to be the local area he knows and loves so well: Chelsea.

“Chelsea is a place of great inspiration to me. I have so many memories here. But my favourite part is the river, with its barges and embankments. I have spent the last few months painting plein air and enjoyed it immensely. It has been a journey of discovery and re-discovery: corners of Chelsea I had forgotten and new ones that I saw for the first time. I have enjoyed meeting the residents, who have shared their own stories and personal relationships with the area”.
