Dobet Gnahore is hailed as one of the freshest talents in new African music. She sings in seven languages and embraces a wide variety of musical styles from using her native popular music called ziglibiti and other West African Mandinka melodies to those from further afield like Congolese rumba and Cameroonian bikoutsi. As a true polyglot, she masters and sings in many African languages including Swahili, which is from the opposite side of the continent from where she grew up.
Onstage Dobet is an amazing whirl of passion and motion, her dreadlocks fly as she dances and sings with a voice and range that Robin Denslow of the Guardian described as having a "cool, easy-going vocal style that at times makes her sound classically trained." Her vocal prowess is complemented by her skill as a guitarist and percussionist, alongside her superb band.
The Boston Globe recently said of her live show "Gnahore's not-so-secret weapon for lifting her performance to another level was her wild, acrobatic dancing, which she saved for exactly the right moments." To enhance this aspect of her dynamic live performance Dobet and her band will perform a specially choreographed show alongside two of the UK's most innovative African dancers; Kwame Obeng and Landing Manneh, in a special commission, funded by Arts Council England.
Currently championed by Songlines magazine, Dobet is a leading artist heralding the next generation of African stars. Her new album "Na Dre" on Contre Jour label was released April 2014.
