In a series of illustrated talks, Daniel Rosenthal, author of The National Theatre Story (winner of the Theatre Book Prize 2013), explores the film adaptations of acclaimed NT plays.
Closer (Cottesloe, 1997) is Patrick Marber’s London-set four-hander about the criss-crossing love lives of a photographer, a dermatologist, a journalist and a some-time stripper, and was produced more than 150 times worldwide in just six years. Then, in 2004, Mike Nichols’ film of Closer, starring Julia Roberts, Jude Law, Clive Owen and Natalie Portman, transformed the play’s original ending – and became a global hit.
