‘A Silver Lining Through the Dark Clouds Shining: the Development of Anaesthesia During the First World War’ is a series of four exhibitions, each lasting a year. The exhibitions commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War and will explore the development of anaesthesia and pain relief and how the status of anaesthesia changed during this time.

The first exhibition, The Evolution of an Anaesthetic Machine, runs until early July 2015 and will look at the work of Geoffrey Marshall and Henry Edmund Gaskin Boyle, two medical pioneers of the Great War period. It has been suggested that Boyle borrowed drawings from Marshall for the design of the Boyle anaesthetic machine. The exhibition looks at who actually designed this pioneering piece of equipment that is still in use today and is the forerunner of modern anaesthesia workstations used throughout the world.
