American-born but for many years now a Parisian resident, China Moses has been making waves as not only a powerful and charismatic Jazz and Blues singer, but also as an actress, producer, writer and host of both radio and TV shows. The daughter of iconic jazz vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater and director Gilbert Moses, China has been steeped in music and theatre since she was a child. Exceptionally gifted, in 1996, at the age of 16, she released in France both her first single and her first video to considerable acclaim. This success was followed by a further three albums that established her as a force to be reckoned with on the European R’ n’ B scene. Not content to just rest on her laurels, China sought out collaborations with a number of artists from different genres, including the likes of DJ Mehdi, Karriem Riggins, Guru and the metal/soul band that experimented with a fascinating fusion of rock, funk and hip hop, Sound Good To You. But she always came back to her first love, Jazz and Blues. At the same time she also did the voice over for Princess Tiana in the French version of Walt Disney’s film The Princess and the Frog, appeared on music channels such as MCM (1999-2001) and MTV France (2004-2011), the French TV show Le Grand Journal and since October 2011 has been presenting Jazz Radio’s Made in China programme. And if all that wasn’t enough she has just finished a season playing Sally Bowles in a revival of “Cabaret”! But it is for her remarkable singing that China is best known. I first met her when we were sitting on an International Jazz Jury and her knowledge of music and performance was clearly impressive. What was even more impressive, though, was the concert she gave at the end of the Competition which left all the young upcoming singers open-mouthed with admiration and a sense of “Ah, so that’s how you do it”! A wonderful performer with a powerful personality to match it’s with enormous pleasure that we welcome China to the Club for this very special London jazz Festival date. Booking advised. £18
