Born in Azerbaijan, the internationally-acclaimed pianist Amina Figarova was something of a child prodigy, playing the piano from the age of two. She attended Baku Conservatory as a classical pianist, but moved to the jazz studies course at Rotterdam Conservatory to pursue her love of jazz (a passion inherited from her parents), eventually completing her studies at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. As well as a talented and fluent performer, Amina was also developing as an original and extremely impressive composer, and in 1994 she recorded a debut CD of all original material entitled “Attraction”. By the spring of 2000 Amina was artist-in-residence in the San Francisco Bay Area before heading back to Rotterdam, where she performed, taught and toured from for most of the 2000s. She has worked with the likes of James Moody, Larry Coryell, Nathan Davis, Toots Thielemans, Claudio Roditi, and Kim Prevost as well as touring her own sextet for more than 18 years. The sextet plays only Amina’s original material and has performed world wide at festivals and cities including the Newport Jazz Festival, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Chicago, Detroit, Paris, Amsterdam and of course New York. In 2010 Amina relocated to New York where she made an immediate impact and in doing so cemented her standing as an international artist of immense power and creativity. Amina appeared here last year in a duo with saxophonist Gilad Atzmon and I as so impressed with her playing that I invited her to perform at this year’s LJF there and then! A unique opportunity to catch this brilliant sextet that also features flautist Bart Platteau. £16

“Figarova…a major artist” Evening Standard;
“Figarova's style cannot be classified neatly in any traditional genre because she has forged an individual character….it is simply Figarova. Rare are the musicians about whom this can be said" AllAboutJazz
