Paul has been in demand as a bass player since the late 70s, working with Allan Holdsworth on the seminal album “IUO”, Ian Carr’s “Nucleus”, Barbara Thomson’s “Paraphernalia” and Steve Topping’s “Time and Distance”. He’s a regular here at the Club, where he can be heard leading his own blistering band playing his own jazz fusion originals from “Wax is Melting”, his most recent CD. On this evening however Paul will be joined by two of his long-time collaborators, American singer/pianist (and former London resident) Jeff Young and UK soul and funk vocalist Vanessa Haynes, who, with Paul, worked together on Vanessa’s first album “Stay with Me” (2006). The record, which yielded the singles “Embrace” and “I Wonder” is a melodic, groove-laden, soul gem that predicated Vanessa’s later success as a feature vocalist with Van Morrison, Chaka Khan and currently, Incognito. Jeff Young’s soulful, lyrical, voice and fluent keyboard playing have been an integral part of Jackson Browne’s band for many years, and as a freelance musician of the highest calibre, he’s also recorded and toured with some of the very best performers in the world, including Bonnie Raitt, Donald Fagen, Bruce Springsteen, Al Green, Michael McDonald, Robert Palmer, Curtis Stigers, Randy Crawford, Bo Diddley, Sting and Steely Dan. A very old friend of the club (he’s been performing here since the mid 80’s) it’s with great pleasure that we welcome him back tonight. There’s going to be a lovely, warm vibe in the room as these three fantastic musicians perform a selection of favourite songs from their vast collective repertoire of soul, funk and jazz crossover material.
