Morgan Wyman's latest exhibition HARDHOUSE explores the quest for pleasure in suburban settings. Often in these seemingly mundane or innocent dwellings there is more than meets the eye, much like in the intriguing prints Wyman presents here. Growing up in a semi detached suburban home, Wyman developed an interest in peoples private behaviours and soon became aware that many of us will find ways of escaping reality when life becomes difficult or even comfortable and monotonous. HARDHOUSE is a study into swinging in the suburbs. The repetitive use of pampas grass, which is used as a subtle code between members of swinging circles, has erotic undertones, highlighting the hidden nature of the past time. On the surface the images produce the pattern and feel of suburban life, yet they are intrinsically laces with debauchery and decadence. This exhibition reflects not only secret suburban lifestyles but mankind's need for excitement and escape. Wyman builds up layers of print to create a rich canvas of form, colour and texture. In turn this body of work asks the viewer to delve deeper and look beyond the sometimes distracting top layer to see what lies beneath, as things are not always as they seem. Wyman's background as a Landscape Architect is often reflected in the structural symmetry and form of his work, however, his lack of formal training or art education gives him the ability to create work purely based on our natural human connection towards pleasure.
