Join us for the UK Premiere of Blood Fruit as part of the Irish Film Festival London at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA).

2014 / 80 Mins / Dir: Sinead O'Brien / (15)

A feature documentary focussing on the Dunnes Stores strikers in 1980's Dublin. In July 1984 the naive action taken by one young Irish shop cashier was about to change the face of the anti-apartheid movement around the world.

Feature-documentary award winner and crowd pleaser at the Galway Film Fleadh, Blood Fruit takes us to 1984, the height of apartheid in South Africa.

Mary Manning, a 21-year-old Dunnes Stores checkout girl, refused to sell two Outspan grapefruits under direction from her union in support of the anti-apartheid struggle. She and ten other supporters were suspended and a strike ensued. The 11 knew little about apartheid and assumed they’d be back to work before long but the arrival on the picket line of activist Nimrod Sejake changed everything, setting the strikers on a path they could never have expected.

Blood Fruit won Best Feature Documentary at the 2014 Galway Film Fleadh and has been selected for numerous International Documentary Film Festivals this year.

The Irish Film Festival London presents the latest and greatest Irish Film to a UK audience. The screenings cover 5 days (19th - 23rd November) at 5 venues (Picturehouse Clapham, Hackney, Tricycle, ICA and Europe House) and include numerous UK Premieres and Q&As with directors and casts.
