Hidden Gems of Ilford Walk

Do you remember Fairheads, the Ilford Palais or the Pioneer Market? Or would you like to find out where the most loved current shops in Ilford are?

Join this tour of local businesses and discover Ilford! The route will refer to the new guidebook that has been produced and will include Asian and Polish supermarkets, fabric and sewing shops, and fascinating barbers and hardware stores. There will be lots of opportunities to stop to make purchases along the way.

Led by artist Lucy Harrison who has been collecting stories about local independent businesses in Ilford, including those that have closed down and are sadly missed as well as new ones that have recently opened.

Lucy has collected the shared reflections of local residents along with archive photography to create a fascinating free local guidebook, which is complemented by a programme of walks and events, to celebrate and uncover the untold stories behind Ilford’s retail history. These explore historic music venues, record shops and department stores; alongside new cafes, restaurants and shop owners who have all played their part in the cultural landscape of Ilford town centre.
