NLCC presents a wild and dangerous programme of animal-inspired music for a cappella chorus – a unique aural experience:
New London Chamber Choir’s first concert with conductor Matthew Hamilton brings a noisy menagerie of creatures riotously to life in a virtuoso programme of a cappella works. Giles Swayne’s The Tiger sets the well-known poem by William Blake in various human and non-human languages, and features wild, jungle-inspired sounds. Judith Bingham’s Unpredictable but Providential celebrates the spring arrival of migratory birds, while Danish composer Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen’s Madrigals from the Natural World take their inspiration from elephants, egrets and bat’s sonar. No less dramatic (and often no more polite) are madrigals from an earlier generation – Janequin’s Chant des oiseaux and Banchieri’s Contrapunto Bestiale demonstrate that composers and singers have long felt the need to release their inner beasts!
