Muscovado

by Matilda Ibini

'How come the cane taste so sweet, yet feasts on my blood?’

Muscovado, the scorching new play by Matilda Ibini, is set on a sugar plantation in Barbados in 1808, with a heady mix of sexual intrigue, piercing choral music and extreme racial tension. Muscovado provides a snapshot at the heart of the Fairbranch family and their slaves, accompanied by an original musical score and atmospheric soundscape performed live.

Muscovado will be completing a UK tour in 2015.

Matilda Ibini trained on Royal Court’s Writers Programme, is Soho Theatre’s Writer-in-Residence and the youngest winner of BBCWritersroom10 Award.

Muscovado was commissioned and developed by BurntOut Theatre with support from V&A Museum, Arts Council England and Farnham Maltings.

“A truly visceral experience. The sweat dripping from the bodies of the actors, confessions in candlelight and sacred song combine with some great writing from a promising future playwright.” British Theatre Guide, on Muscovado

“Stirring. This isn’t theatre for the faint-hearted – it’s grueling stuff. Go if you can.” FemaleArts.com, on Muscovado
