Instigated in 1831 the art collection of the Royal Scottish Academy has been growing steadily for over 180 years. Within Scotland it is unique. It was established by artists for artists and has been built up independently of public funding. Over the years it has developed into a nationally significant collection including work produced by Scottish artists, work by artists active in Scotland and work from farther afield but with major impact on home-grown creativity. In support of this the Academy holds a rich archive of artists’ papers and memorabilia and a library of amazing strength and depth.

In her lecture Dr Joanna Soden will explore the development of the Academy’s art collection and highlight themes that span the centuries. It will reveal the collection’s strength through its depth and diversity and the changing role of the Academy since its foundation in 1826.
