Brahms: Academic Festival Overture
Mozart: Clarinet Concerto
Shostakovich: Symphony No. 9

Colin Lawson – clarinet
Richard Dickins – conductor

Trinity Orchestra is privileged to present this performance with world-renowned clarinetist Colin Lawson, Director of London’s Royal College of Music. Described as “the doyen of period clarinettists” by BBC Music Magazine, he has an international profile as a performer, having recorded extensively and toured world-wide. Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto is a piece full of grace and lyricism which has become one of the composer’s best-loved and most frequently performed works.

Led by guest conductor Richard Dickins, the orchestra will also present Brahms’ bright and breezy Academic Festival Overture. It was composed in 1880 to acknowledge the Honorary Doctorate that the University of Breslau conferred on Brahms, and thus is a celebration of student life, incorporating rousing student drinking songs.

Shostakovitch’s playful Symphony No 9 will close the concert. Shorter and much lighter than his previous symphonies, Shostakovich himself called the work “a joyful little piece”.

Join us for a pre-concert talk at 7pm through which you can learn more about the evening’s music.
