An evening with the political philosopher David Marquand

In his latest book, Mammon’s Kingdom: an essay on Britain, now, published in paperback this January, David Marquand calls for a public debate on the need for a ‘moral economy’. Britain is Mammon’s Kingdom and scandals in financial services highlight the nation’s preoccupation with making money. Yet the appalling gap between wealth and poverty has grown dramatically. What needs to change? And what can be done about it? Professor Marquand’s lecture is in a series of ‘TIGE Talks’, on Trust and Integrity in the Global Economy, and will contribute to his call for a public debate on the issues.

David Marquand is a former Labour Member of Parliament and Chief Advisor in the Secretariat General of the European Commission. He was Principal of Mansfield College, Oxford, 1996-2002. His many books include The Unprincipled Society: New Demands and Old Politics, The Progressive Dilemma: From Lloyd George to Blair, and Decline of the Public: The Hollowing-out of Citizenship. He is a Fellow of both the British Academy and the Learned Society of Wales. In 2001 he received the Sir Isaiah Berlin Prize for a lifetime contribution to Political Studies.

The evening will be hosted by the UK business programme of Initiatives of Change.
