GX Gallery presents a new exhibition of oil paintings by Colin Halliday: The Nature of Paint (24 March – 18 April 2015).

In this new collection, Colin Halliday reminds us of the simple beauty of landscape. Halliday started painting en plein air nine years ago and paints alla prima, ‘wet on wet’, using a reduced colour palette of pure oil paint – cadmium yellows and reds, lemon yellow, blue ultramarine, titanium white and cerulean blue. He paints standing up on location in all seasons and weathers, using a camping table as a makeshift palette with large palette knives and generous amounts of paint.

“Landscape is my chosen subject because I am blown away by its beauty, always have been, and also its timelessness. Landscape doesn’t seek to convey a message, story, idea or concept. It feels like an escape from consumerism and an art world which I can no longer relate to…” – Colin Halliday
