Gallery Launch: 'Insohreckshan/Gentriphickayshan' by Jo Stanford

A series of abstract and figurative paintings in oil and watercolour by Jo Stanford. 'Insohreckshan/Gentriphickayshan' represents an exploration of life in Brixton.

Focusing on individuals who have alternately shaped and been shaped by Brixton, rather than buildings, a more intimate picture emerges of a vibrant locality pulsating with characters and a life of its own. Through the mediums of oil and watercolour, representing both longevity and ephemerality, the paintings explore the uniqueness of local life. As a friend once remarked to me having returned to Brixton from a trip to the country, 'Its full of people; mad, bad, beautiful and sad, but at least it's full'.
