James Weeks - Mala punica with instrumental interludes (word premiere)
A cycle of musical canons, James Weeks’s Mala punica (Pomegranates) draws from the biblical Song of Songs, a poem of divine love. Natural images from the text – curling vines, fruiting figs and pomegranates, intoxicating wine – are transformed into musical ideas. Framing this are instrumental interludes constructing a sonic garden pictured at dawn, afternoon and dusk.
