TYBURNIA is a collaboration between The Dead Rat Orchestra and artist/filmmaker James Holcombe - an experimental 16mm documentary which explores the history and legacy of London's Tyburn Gallows - the city's principal hanging spot for 600 years. The film charts an alternative history of the UK, illuminating the twists and turns of sovereign and political whimsy, church and state, and the birth of mercantile capitalism. TYBURNIA highlights parallels between our past and our present, raising questions about the nature of power.
There will be a live soundtrack to the film at (or close to) gallows sites across the country - with songs sourced from 17th/18th century broadside ballads and songs in Thieves Cant.
The screening will be followed by Q&A and debate with local historians, human rights activists etc - with the ambition of sparking dialogue around the themes explored in the film.
