The Scottish have a reputation for bold building. From the neoclassical and gothic to art noveau and modernist, architecture in Scotland has consistently reinvented itself, while its architects and engineers have crossed the globe leaving a legacy of structures and Scots style in all parts of the world. In a special late evening of talks, films, activities and more, RIBA charts 200 years of ‘Great Scots!’ architecture and invention - celebrating its evolution and its icons.

Talks
‘Scots Baronial - The Rise of a National Architectural Identity’
6.20 to 6.50pm, Jarvis Hall, Lower Ground Floor
Curator Charles Hind charts the emergence of a new and confident Scottish architecture in the 1800s that broke away from the classical and celebrated its historical links with confidence and flair.

‘Scots Engineering and Invention’
7 to 7.30pm, Jarvis Hall, Lower Ground Floor
Architect John McAslan explores the high points of Scottish engineering and invention revealing the many structures, machines and big bang moments that shook our world.

‘Embracing the Modern – the Scottish 20th Century’

The Twentieth Century Society looks at the Scots experience of modernism, charting a century of buildings, events and key figures that redefined its landscape for a new age.

Much like Charles Rennie Mackintosh, architect Grey Wornum worked closely with his artist wife to design the RIBA headquarters building at 66 Portland Place. Tour our unique building full of beautiful Art Deco inspired details, interesting architectural history and hidden stories.

Scottish landmarks Pairs Game

Come and play our giant game of Pairs – also known as Concentration. Turn over two cards at a time and see who can remember where the pairs are. All images on the cards are from our RIBA collections and once found are yours to keep! Sign up in pairs or small teams throughout the evening.

Taken from the British Council’s Film Archive, these three historic films together take us on a journey through the richness and variety of the Scottish landscape revealing its history through some of its most famous people, places, sights and sounds. 'Cumbernauld, Town for Tomorrow'(1970) & 'A Future Reclaimed' (2015)
On loop together between 6 to 9.45pm
Two films exploring two Scottish icons of modernism - a new town, dancing to a confident post-war beat, is contrasted with a film exploring an ambitious scheme by NVA to reclaim the extraordinary ruins of the world renowned St Peter’s seminary - one of the UK’s greatest brutalist structures by architects Gillespie, Kidd & Coia (1966), which now sits shrouded deep in Kilmahew woods on the west coast of Scotland.

'The Role of The Architect' (2015)

Thinking about a career in architecture? Considering your next move in design? With commentary from guest contributors, this film by past RIBA president Angela Brady explores the qualities and skills required for architects today. (33mins)

Exhibition & Displays
Mackintosh Architecture
6 to 10pm, The Architecture Gallery, Ground Floor
Celebrated worldwide, Charles Rennie Mackintosh is one of the leading figures of late 19th and early 20th Century architecture and one of Scotland’s most celebrated sons. This exhibition is one of the first devoted to his architecture and reveals the evolution of his style from early apprenticeship to visionary architect and designer.

Beyond Mackintosh - Contemporary works by Katy Dove, Lucy Reynolds and Liz Lochhead
6 to 10pm The Studio Space/Basement, Ground Floor/Lower ground
From film, sound and poetry the works by Dove, Reynolds and Lochhead highlight the roots of Mackintosh’s legacy within contemporary artistic practice today. Each artist brings into focus subtle links or direct inroads leading back to Mackintosh.

The Future City - gallery tours at 6.45pm and 7.30pm
6 to 10pm, The Practice Space, Second Floor
Organised in partnership with Foresight, this display charts a visual history of the future as the basis to explore the UK’s key urban challenges. What do changing technologies, demographics and lifestyles mean for our cities? What might they look like by 2065?
