Tonight we will be hosting a special night in aid of one of our favourite charities, SMART. Founded in 1985 SMART moved to its present location in Gertrude Street, just around the corner from us here at the Club, in 1993. It’s a drop-in centre whose aim is to support those with all forms of mental illness, from the relatively minor to the severe by providing vocational work and training in a wide variety of subjects and interests, from gardening, IT work, professional cooking (through employment in their excellent café) and floristry to art, fitness and of course music. Every week, under the guidance of musician/teacher Sarah Wilson, a number of the Smart members who are also musicians meet up to rehearse and perform in the Smart Café. Composed of a mix of ex-professionals and talented semi-professionals the band performs a mix of popular songs, jazz and blues. It will be a selection of musicians from this band who, directed by Sarah, will be performing for the first set this evening under the self-titled name, Mad In Chelsea! And as it’s the 606 Club we felt we needed to have a presence as well so we will be fielding, for the second set, our own band of regulars, led by the brilliant Award-winning vocalist Polly Gibbons and featuring pianist Tim Lapthorn and sax/flute player Steve Rubie. Polly Gibbons is one of the most respected and talked about singers of her generation. Since first hitting the UK jazz scene more than 10 years ago, Polly has developed into a consummate performer with a sultry, distinctive style as much at home singing tender jazz ballads as she is performing rockin’ R&B classics. She includes work with the likes of Joss Stone, Alison Moyet, Mick Hucknall and Charlotte Church on an impressive CV. With two recent CD releases to her name, one in the UK and in the US (Resonance Records based in LA), Polly’s star is undoubtedly on the rise. The 606 Club has a particularly long and fruitful association with Smart, who we think do a great job with very little funding, so do make it down to support this really worthy charity and have a great night…all at the same time! Booking advised.

“Polly Gibbons…a truly exceptional, once in a generation talent, possessing a voice of such sizzling intensity and raw emotion you could fry an egg on it” Jazzwise;
“There’s a rare sense of joy in her voice, not to mention a depth of…feeling….remarkable” Evening Standard
