Students from 6 different UK universities are taking to the streets of London just before Easter to raise funds for international charity Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF).

Students will descend on the capital, targeting tube and mainline stations and the streets of the square mile for a period of two days (Wednesday 1 and Thursday 2 April) with the aim of trying to raise over £30,000 for the charity.

Meningitis Research Foundation estimates that there are around 3,200 cases of meningitis and septicaemia every year in the UK. The diseases can affect anyone of any age, but babies, young children, teenagers and young adults are most at risk. As many as one in ten of those affected will die and a third of survivors will be left with after-effects, some as serious as brain damage, amputations, blindness and hearing loss.

MRF’s ‘London Loot’ will bring together over 150 Rag members from universities in Loughborough, Warwick, Portsmouth, Northumbria, Kent and Nottingham.

“London Loot is a big fundraising challenge for the students,” said Christopher Head, Chief Executive, “Collecting £30,000 in spare change is hard work but the energy and enthusiasm of everyone involved really makes the whole experience memorable and fun whilst also raising money for research into meningitis and septicaemia. We hope the commuters of London will be generous and dig deep. ”

Collections will take place on Wednesday 1 April in overground Train stations and at Tube stations on Thursday 2 April in the City of London.

People will be able to follow the progress using the hashtag #Loot15 on Twitter and Facebook and via our Facebook page facebook.com/mrfstudents
