The world’s first edible cake garden - made from sponge, chocolate, icing and sugar - is set to be unveiled in London’s Russell Square.

On St George’s Day (23rd April) the quintessentially English walled garden, complete with fruit loaf bricks grouted with Nutella and covered in edible ivy and sugar flowers, will open to the public to mark the paperback launch of best-selling author Carole Matthews’ new novel The Cake Shop in the Garden.

The garden in the book’s title will be recreated with delectable delights including chocolate crumb soil and chocolate puffed rice cake stepping stones. A traditional bird bath will be given a sugary twist with Royal icing and a cocoa filling whilst the lawn will be dotted with chocolate pebbles.

Visitors will be encouraged to ‘dig in’ to a bourbon biscuit border, whilst edible roses, plants and ivy will adorn sugar paste planters. In this cake-lover’s wonderland even the insects are edible as guests are invited to nibble on a plant pot or devour a daisy.

Carole will be on site from 12pm-2pm to meet and greet fans who are encouraged to bring along their own editions of the delicious seasonal read for signing. Copies of the book will also be on sale for any passers-by wanting to grab a slice of the action. To sweeten the deal, publisher Little, Brown Book Group is offering free copies of the book to any readers who bring along a cake to add to the garden, whilst stocks last.

Author Carole Matthews says: “The garden is the place where love, life and family collide for my main character, Faye Merriweather. It's really exciting to bring it to life using cake as it features so prominently throughout the storyline. The edible garden will certainly be one of a kind – and where better for visitors to grab a slice of the action?”
