An exhibition of new paintings and drawings capturing anecdotes and narratives from Susan Sluglett’s artist residency, alongside work by members of the Borough Group.

During her three-month residency at the Gallery (3 December 2014 – 28 February 2015), Susan Sluglett, Borough Road Gallery’s first Artist in Residence, was inspired both by the paintings, drawings and prints in ‘A David Bomberg Legacy – The Sarah Rose Collection’ and by the stories of the many visitors that came to her studio. The resulting works capture and draw out just some of the anecdotes and narratives – real and imaginary – collected along the way. The title of the exhibition reflects this layered experience. ‘Flowers Rhythm’ is one of the most important works by David Bomberg in ‘A David Bomberg Legacy – The Sarah Rose Collection’, and ‘Hands’ is a painting by Dorothy Mead created the year before she died. When talking to Mead’s sister, Sluglett discovered that the artist would ask for white paint for Christmas because it was so expensive. A new series of paintings, ‘For Dorothy’, depicts pairs of white gloves: they form a group but each pair has a different rhythm and character.
