An opportunity to look at the rich history of Russian theatre at the National Theatre.

This short course offers a wide introduction to Russian theatre. From Laurence Olivier's first NT production of Uncle Vanya to the latest productions, covering landmark interpretations of classic Russian dramatists (Chekhov, Tolstoy, Bulgakov, Gorky, Nabokov), modern treatments of Russian and Soviety history (Collaborators by John Hodge, Singe Spies by Alan Bennett) and internationally acclaimed Russian and Georgian companies hosted by the NT.

Using play readings, archive material, photography, rare footage and original script extracts and reviews, Tim Hoare leads this engaging and informal course.

Course Outline

Session 1: Chekhov

Session 2: The Classics, 19th century Russian writers

Session 3: The modern, 20th century Russian drama.

Session 4: Spies, revolutionaries and tyrants. British theatre and Russia.

Tim Hoare was the NT staff director on Sam Mendes' production of King Lear and regularly leads NT learning programmes. He has worked with Max Stafford-Clark and is an associate at Out of Joint.
