Restoration Comedy featured in the National's opening season, with a celebrated production of Farquhar's The Recruiting Officer in 1963-64. Since then, more than a dozen other productions of plays such as The Man of Mode, The Country Wife and London Assurance have been staged at the Old Vic and on the South Bank.
As Farquhar's The Beaux' Stratagem plays in the Olivier, participants in this session will join Daniel Rosenthal, author of The National Theatre Story, to examine show reports, costume bibles, photographs, press reviews and other NT Archive material, and explore the contrasting approaches of directors such as Peter Wood and Nicholas Hytner.
Supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund.
