The centre of global finance, waves of immigration from Europe, a world-wide cultural Capital, an ever-increasing gap between rich and poor... Eighteenth-century London had the same inescapable gravity that contemporary London exerts on musicians across the world. Handel and JC Bach (son of the famous JS Bach) both made their home in London, with Haydn and a very young Mozart visiting for fame and fortune.
