The 21st June has been declared as the International Day of Yoga by the United Nations with the support of the UK and 176 other countries. This followed an initiative by the Prime Minister of India calling for yoga to be internationally recognised, in order to celebrate the invaluable gift this ancient Indian tradition has upon the mind and body.

In the UK, the day will witness celebrations organised by over 30 yoga and cultural institutions all across the country. It will be launched in London on 21st June by the High Commission and the Government of India Tourist Office at an event organised in collaboration with the British Wheel of Yoga, Sivananda Vedanta Centre and Art of Living Foundation.

The event will be held at Bernie-Spain Garden, close to the OXO Tower on South Bank, London on 21 June 2015 from 09:00am to 14:30pm. It will commence with the lighting of a lamp followed by free yoga classes and will include a lecture by the eminent Ecologist and Philosopher Mr. Satish Kumar on “Yoga – The Way of Life”.

Suitable for all the family and abilities, the day is free to attend and will provide yoga sessions taught by some of the yoga world’s most inspirational instructors and will include the following classes:

09:00-09:50: Lighting of the Lamp and Hatha Yoga for all levels by the British Wheel of Yoga
10:00-10:45: Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga by the British Wheel of Yoga
11:00-11:45: Family Yoga by the British Wheel of Yoga
12:00-12:30: Lecture on Yoga by well-known ecologist and philosopher Mr. Satish Kumar
12:30-13:15: iMeditate session with Art of Living Foundation

Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual discipline that not only tones the outer and inner body through the circulation of blood to organs and muscle, but also relaxes the mind through breathing techniques.

The International Day of Yoga is being celebrated all over the world on 21st June and the Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi will take the lead in launching the commemoration in India.
