Castle Fine Art will be exhibiting a collection of never-before-seen original works by emerging artist David Rees, alongside signed limited edition releases. Each striking figurative piece features a woman, depicted in a palette of Fauvist style bright hues set against an abstract background.
Inspired by emerging contemporary painters such as Andrew Salgado, Ryan Hewitt and Mark Demsteader, Rees experiments with different techniques in his portraiture aiming for a fluid and expressive feel. Oil paint is smeared onto the canvas with a palette knife, hints of delicate colour are carefully applied with a paintbrush, and he also doesn’t shy away from throwing or flicking paint on to his work to add extra energy and detail.
The artist says: “It is so important when painting to not to be afraid to make mistakes. I give myself free reign to be brave with how I paint. The more conservative I am, the worse the final product is."
