Winner of our ‘Create/Scratch/ Refine/Repeat’ competition, Worklight Theatre, return to the Morley Studio Theatre with their full length preview of their new show Labels before heading up to Edinburgh Fringe.
This new solo show from the award-winning Worklight Theatre draws on writer/performer Joe Sellman-Leava’s experiences of mixed heritage and racism. Labels examines the way we use words, the line between curiosity and fear, and the rise of anti-immigration rhetoric.

Labels started life during a workshop with Emma Thompson. When the UKIP “phenomenon” placed immigration at the centre of the 2015 general election, Worklight felt compelled to redevelop the piece to premiere at this year’s Fringe.

Amid the cacophony of statistics and sound bites that surround the immigration debate, Labels offers an honest, human story about multicultural Britain.

“Powerful, important and funny.” (Emma Thompson on Labels)

About Worklight Theatre

Worklight founded in Exeter in 2011, as creators of devised, politically-charged theatre. Their debut show How to Start a Riot received critical acclaim at Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2012, and won two awards at Reading Fringe Festival 2013 (Best Show and Best Actor). They are an Associate Company of both Stage@Leeds and The Barbican Theatre Plymouth, where they developed their second show I Think I’m a Feminist, with support from Arts Council England.

Labels was a joint winner of Create/Scratch/Refine/Repeat with joue le genre’s To She or Not to She, and both shows have previews in London and Exeter before premiering at Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2015 (Pleasance Courtyard, 5th-31st August).
