Six Tibetan Buddhist monks from the Tashi Lhunpo monastery in Bylakuppe, India, will construct a sand mandala on Friday 31st July at the offices of the charity Tibet Relief Fund in Haggerston.

The mandala construction will be framed by an exhibition of photographs by Geoff Harris, who recently travelled to the monastery and spent a week photographing the monks and their activities. His shots paint a vivid picture of monastic life; debating sessions, cooking and Losar (Tibetan New Year) celebrations are just a few activities you can see in Geoff's photos.

The exhibition will be open to the public on Friday 31st July and Saturday 1st August and the mandala construction can also be viewed.

The monks will destroy the mandala on Saturday 1st August according to tradition. Visitors to the exhibition can watch this exciting traditional event!

Background information

The Tashi Lhunpo monastery is the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama. Originally located in Central Tibet, many of the monks escaped during the 1959 national uprising and reestablished the monastery in India, which today houses around 250 monks.

Geoff Harris is a professional travel photographer and was editor of Digital Camera magazine for six years.

Tibet Relief Fund is a charity supporting Tibetans and Tibetan refugees in India, Nepal and Tibet, through vital projects providing education, healthcare and community sustainability. Donations to Tibet Relief Fund are welcomed at the exhibition and proceeds from photographs sold will also support Tibet Relief Fund's work.
