The Savage Hour is Elaine Proctor’s second novel following the critically acclaimed Rumba (Quercus 2012).
The character Ouma in The Savage Hour is based on Elaine Proctor’s own mother, who has suffered from Alzheimer’s for over a decade and is cared for by her brother in South Africa.
Elaine has learnt through her mother that living with Alzheimer’s is akin to experiencing “a million little deaths.”
Elaine has watched her independent and vivacious mother lose her words and her memory and seen the resulting pain and sadness.
The Savage Hour is a chance for Elaine to give her mother the end that she truly wished for before Alzheimer’s took away her autonomy.
