HISTORIC London foodie destination Borough Market has announced a programme of blindfolded tours, joining forces with London based charity The Royal London Society for Blind People (RLSB) to raise awareness about the reality of childhood sight loss.

The free tours, taking place on 23rd and 30th July between 10.30 and 11am, offer a new perspective on the hustle and bustle of the world-famous market, allowing visitors to wander the famed cobbled streets experiencing the sounds and smells in a completely new way.

With a map and blindfold collected from the Information Office, pairs will be able to follow the sensory route set by Borough Market’s resident expert and Development Officer David Matchett to explore the delectable smells, delicious flavours, textures and sounds the market has to offer.

Each sense will be heightened as visitors are offered a unique insight into how blind young people experience some of the capital’s top pastimes.

The Blindfolded Borough tours form part of the London Without Limits festival, a series of surprising, sensory and sociable events which allow visitors to experience top venues and attractions like never before.

A quartet from Inner Visions Orchestra, the UK’s only blind orchestra, will be performing live in the market from 11.30am - 12.15pm following the blindfold tour on Thursday 30th July.

The festival aims to raise awareness about the loneliness, unemployment and poverty that many blind young people experience. RLSB focuses on helping 11,000 vision impaired young people across London and the South East.

David Matchett, Market Development Manager at Borough Market said: “Borough Market has always been a place where people come to connect, to share food and awaken their senses. Being guided around Borough Market blindfolded allowed me to discover the space anew, with all its associated aromas and sounds, and I’m looking forward to sharing this inspirational experience with others.”

Places for the tours are limited, and all participants must bring a partner to act as their guide.

TICKETS: Tickets are free but places are limited so participants are advised to book ahead.
