Ross Mahoney, Aviation Historian at the Royal Air Force Museum, will present a lecture on ‘Air Power, Combined Operations and the Gallipoli Campaign, 1915’ as part of the Royal Air Force Museum’s First World War in the Air Lunchtime Lectures.

TALK OUTLINE
The Gallipoli Campaign of 1915 remains shrouded in the Anzac myth related to the role of the ANZAC corps in this ill-fated operation. However, more recently, historians have begun to peel back the complex layers about its planning, conduct and aftermath from the perspective of the Allies and the Turkish defenders. In this lecture, Ross Mahoney, Aviation Historian at the Royal Air Force Museum, will examine one of least understood aspects of the Gallipoli campaign; the use of air power. This lecture will consider some of the challenges faced by Britain’s air arms in supporting the campaign, such as roles, equipment, logistics, doctrine and command. It will seek to analysis the effectiveness of air power in supporting operations, such as during the failed August offensive and during the withdrawal phase. Finally, the lecture will then also consider the campaign’s influence on combined operations doctrine between the wars.

LOCATION AND TIME
This lecture will be held in the museum lecture theatre at 12:30PM on Friday 14 August 2015.
