India’s Gateway is a stunning new multimedia exhibition which traces the history of Gujarat and Mumbai as age-old centres of migration and trade, focusing on their remarkable links with Britain.

When sailing ships from London reached Gujarat in 1608, the region became the first point of contact between Britain and the Indian subcontinent. It was the beginning of an extraordinary relationship that endures to this day. The relationship changed Gujarat and its people, who themselves have profoundly altered the fabric of modern-day Britain.

The exhibition features photographs and stories by renowned UK photographer Tim Smith. The exhibition tells the story of Britain and the Gujarat region from 1608 to the present day, weaving history together with words and images that explore the lives and experiences of Gujarati communities today.

India’s Gateway is organised by Tim Smith and Bradford-based Oriental Arts. The exhibition is funded by Arts Council England and will be shown at six venues across the UK including Leicester, London and Yorkshire between 2015 and 2017.
