Living in Hackney Wick for the past ten years Ansell Cizic has witnessed considerable transformation of the East End. He has had an anthropologist’s eye on the evolving communities and their sub divisions; watching them grow and flourish.
Over time, it became more and more apparent to Cizic that the creative individuals who have made the East End an attractive financial proposition for the property developers, are now, an endangered species. Posterity demands that their presence and practices be recorded.
‘Artists and Artisans of the East End’ is an ongoing archival project, documenting artists working and living in the East End.
Cizic’s brief to himself was simple: one camera, one lens, daylight and a limited time in which to make the photograph. What’s more, he would not use the intrusive paraphernalia (lighting, stylists, creative directors) of his former photographic incarnation.
Whilst taking these images, Cizic avoided any ‘theme’ yet each image has a unique approach, aesthetic appeal and sense of humour that is particular to Ansell Cizic.
Well Hung Gallery will showcase the first series of photographs from the ongoing project by Ansell Cizic. The exhibition runs from the 1st October to 1st November 2015.
