This new play based on the best-selling 19th century novel set in London’s east end will be performed as a rehearsed reading by an ensemble of professional actors
A young man struggles to survive the ‘blackest pit’ of London before the jail, the gallows, the High Mob or the Jago finally get to him. As his story unfolds, in this first ever dramatization of Arthur Morrison’s social realism novel about the Jago slums of Shoreditch, the themes of child poverty, gang warfare, aspiration, faith, and fatherhood that resonate in our times are relayed with humour, satire and colourful characterisation
The Jago is a London slum based on the old Nichol in Shoreditch where crime and violence seem the only way of life, and from which there seems no escape. The novelist paints an extraordinarily vivid picture of a world which was was about to vanish in one of the first slum clearances, that is also a brilliant portrait of a community.
Captured here for the first time in a new play, performed as a rehearsed reading by an ensemble of professional actors
