Kamayan means to eat only with your hands – no forks, knives, spoons even plates. It’s how pre-colonial Filipinos ate their food before the Spanish conquistadores branded this as savagery and taught our ancestors to use kubyertos (how cubiertos, cutlery, is spelt in the Philippines). Long after the Spanish have gone (including the Americans and Japanese), eating with your hands has been a well-preserved tradition of dining in the Philippines. Kamayan symbolises the raw connection with food, of sharing and enjoying great company whether family or friends.
This October, maynila brings you the chance to experience kamayan in London. Not only will you get your hands dirty (literally!) but also taste Filipino food cooked and prepared the traditional way. The tables will be lined up with banana leaves and all the food will be served across so everyone can enjoy.
Book your seat now at this yummiest feast in London. It will be messy but you can be sure that you’ll be licking your fingers afterwards.
