Tom is a young urban professional who has a bad track record of quickly losing interest in the attractive women he dates. Until he meets the bright and funny Helen and falls in love. There’s only one problem: Helen is a plus-sized woman. Tom now has to struggle with his own moral compass and society’s pressure, embodied by his best friend Carter and ex-love interest Jeannie.
TOM: I'm a weak and fearful person, Helen, and I'm not gonna get any better.
HELEN: It’s something to work on then, right?
Neil LaBute’s characters are desperately human and though they may not all be likeable, they are entirely recognisable. Not one to take the easy route, LaBute’s sharply drawn play not only critiques our slavish adherence to ideals of beauty but boldly questions our own ability to change what we dislike about ourselves.
