Join the Royal Free Music Society for a performance of Gioachino Rossini’s final masterpiece, the Petite Messe Solennelle.
Rossini came out of decades of retirement to compose the mass in 1863, describing it as 'the last mortal sin of my old age'. In his youth, he had become the most celebrated composer of operettas – like The Barber of Seville and William Tell.
The mass - Rossini's only major sacred work - demonstrates his virtuosity as a composer and is now one of the most famous works in the choral canon.
The Rossini will be complemented by a selection of English madrigals, as well as opera choruses by Mozart, Verdi and Mascagni, including favourites from Idomeneo, Nabucco and La Traviata.
Joined by professional soloists, the concert takes place at St John’s Wood Church (opposite Lord’s Cricket Ground).
