As part of Sara Hannant’s exhibition Out of the Fire, Oxford House presents Francesco Dimitri’s workshop Myth in Life: When the Dragon Wins.

Sara Hannant’s exhibition Out of the Fire is part of Photomonth Photography Festival 2015 and coinciding with Ladybird Books centenary. This beautiful and intriguing photographic installation re-enchants the power of fairy tales, as female characters from vintage Ladybird books are transformed through fire. The work reconsiders these iconic children’s books, opening up the narratives to reflect personal and cultural mythologies that bear a relationship to dreams, desires and memory.

Life is made of stories. Stories heal us, they teach us lessons, they make us escape, they set us thinking. In this workshop Myth in Life, When the Dragon Wins, we will learn about the transformative power of stories, and how to harness it to improve our life, empower our career, and get a better understanding of the world around us.

Francesco will give a workshop for adults in response to the exhibition, exploring myths with 'happy' or ‘unhappy’ endings, and the fact they are both powerful and why we need them. In the stories more popular today, the hero always overcomes the dragon, a happy ending waits for us. But in our lives, the dragon sometimes wins. Francesco will help participants engage with the relevance of folk stories in a contemporary context: Myth in Life, When the Dragon Wins will show, through discussion and practical exercises, how myths shape human experience, and how to use them to shape the sort of experience we desire.
