Wagner: The Flying Dutchman Overture
Dvorak: The Golden Spinning Wheel
Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade
John Andrews – conductor
Come along to hear a concert of works inspired by legends and fairy-tales, under the baton of guest conductor John Andrews.
The idea for The Flying Dutchman began to take shape in Wagner‘s mind during a rough sea-crossing, with the music evoking the lash of spray, the whistle of gales in the rigging, misty spectres and heaving waves.
The Golden Spinning Wheel, a tone poem by Dvorák, is full of dramatic incident, imaginative colours and passionate melodies. Based on a Czech poem, this is one of a quartet of symphonic poems which reflect the composer at the height of his craft, both as a melodist and a fine orchestrator.
Completing the concert will be Rimsky Korsakov’s celebrated Scheherazade, an enchanting piece inspired by ‘Tales of the Arabian Nights.’ Featuring beautiful solos for violin (played by our leader, Sally Telling), it is richly orchestrated and full of exotic sensuous melodies, evoking characters such as Sinbad the Sailor.
Join us at 7pm for a free concert talk all about the evening’s music.
